MACCOMBIE, MACCOMBE, MACCOMIE, MACOMIE. (p. 474) G. MacComaidh, a contracted form of MacThomaidh, 'son of Tommie or Tommy'. In Perthshire frequently Englished Thomson. The b was introduced into the name about the end of the eighteenth century.

 

MACTAVISH. (p. 566) From G. MacTámhais, a form of MacThamhais, 'son of Tammas,' the Lowland Scots form of Thomas. Mactavishes are numerous in Argyllshire. The Craignish MS. Says the MacTavishes or Clan Tavish of Dunardarie descend from Tavis Coor, second illegitimate son of Gillespick, son of Cailen moir math, 'good bald Colin' (SHSM., IV, p. 207). Doncan M'Thamais was one of those cited in 1355 to give evidence regarding the lands of Glassre in Argyllshire (HP, II, p. 139). Duncan MacTawisch was tenant of half of Kernach, Strogartnay, 1480 (ER, IX, p. 564). Donald duin Mc tawys made reversion to Evar Campbell of Strouquhour, 1488 (HP, IV, p. 20). Thomas McTaevis, charter witness at Kenaach, 1515 (HP., IV, p. 24). Alexander M'ktaus in 1589 had custody of Ellanwirrich as constable (Wardlaw), p. 184). The Mactavishes of Stratherrick are consider a sept of the Frasers. M'Taveis 1672, McThavish 1676.

 

TAWESON, TAWESSON. (p. 764) An Englishing of MacTavish, q.v. William Tawson appears as bailie of Inverness, 1450 (Invernessiana, p. 119).

 

TAWS, TAWSE. (p. 764). A phonetic spelling of Gaelic Tamhas, 'Thomas'. (Variant spellings: Taus, Taise, Taws, Tawis, Tawus.) See MACTAVISH.

 

THOMAS. )p. 768) A common Angle-Norman personal name. In Gaelic it assumes the forms Tómas, Támhus, hence the Gaelic patronymics MacTavish, MacCombie, and Macomie, q.v.

 

THOMASON, THOMASSON, 'son of Thomas" (p. 768). (Other forms: Thomassoun, Thomassone, Tamesone)

 

THOMPSON. (p. 768) 'son of Thom', q.v., with intrusive p. This spelling is more commonly found in England.

 

THOMSON, 'son of Thom' (p. 768) A fairly numerous surname in Scotland. Many individuals of the name in Perthshire and Argyllshire are ready Mactavishes. The surname in these districts is an Anglicized form of Gaelic MacThómais, son of Thomas, or MacThómaidh, son of Tommie. See also THOMASON.
